The Bargain Box was established in 1965 by three ladies from First Presbyterian Church as a shopping option for the working residents of Hilton Head Island.  By 1970 it was generating enough revenues to provide monetary support to local social agencies and charities, and it was incorporated as a stand-alone 501(c)(3) organization.  The Bargain Box has continued to grow, becoming an Island institution that has returned over $15.3 million in to the community.

The Bargain Box maintains a paid staff of four to handle store management facility maintenance and customer assistance. All Trustees are volunteers. Over 86% of the proceeds from donations goes back to the community in the form of cash grants to other Beaufort County 501c(3) charities.

We are an active part of the local business community cultivating close working relationships with area businesses who contribute their time and resources to The Bargain Box by providing professional advice and support, discounts, a conduit for donations and recycling, etc. The Bargain Box is a member of The Hilton Head Chamber of Commerce.

The Bargain Box

 For The Customers

It's a wonderland of affordable treasures.   Our non-profit thrift shop caters to a broad range of customers and provides everything for home and family, including the unexpected and the unusual (from an Oriental rug to a mink coat to an antique butter churn – and more) ALL AT EVERYDAY BARGAIN PRICES.

For the Lowcountry

The Bargain Box provides a way to recycle usable items that they no longer need in order to benefit local residents and organizations.  It’s a convenient place to bring items they decide they can do without after cleaning out their closets and cupboards – and it's a number to call for a donation pick up of furniture or appliances which are being replaced or downsized.

For The Volunteers

The Bargain Box offers a familiar environment along with the satisfaction of making a material contribution to the community. Working there regularly – in sales, sorting, pricing, etc. - means part of a team. Each day has a different team, with its own camaraderie but all following careful guidelines established over the 50 years of the organization's existence.
